Hateful or Forgetful?
It seems like Edna may like her children more than what had been seen.
It is true that she may not like them too much. “He reproached his wife for
with her inattention, her habitual neglect of the children.” (Chopin 7). She
often ignored her own children and their needs. She would let the nanny take
care of the children and not even know how to tell when one had been ill. But
that does not mean that she had despised or even disliked her children. “She
was fond of her children in an impulsive way. She would sometimes gather them
passionately to her heart; she would sometimes forget them.” (Chopin 25). It is
not that she entirely hates her children, it is the fact that she holds
responsibility for them. It does not make any better as a mother, but at least
it shows she does not absolutely loathe her children.
