Happiness and rebelling

Edna has always wanted a better life, including a better relationship with her husband. However, in her time period, she didn’t have the freedom she could have now, especially in her marriage. She was always unhappy with the way her life was going, but I think Robert makes her happier than she ever was. I feel like the taste of happiness from Robert is making her more hostile towards Mr. Pontellier. “Another time she would have gone in at his request. She would, through habit, have yielded to his desire; not with any sense of submission or obedience to his compelling wishes, but unthinkingly,” (Chopin 42). Edna didn’t want to listen to her husband and go to bed. I believe her animosity towards Mr. Pontellier will make her, in a way, rebel. I predict her biggest act of rebellion will be her trying to leave her family and be with Robert.

  1. I see why you would predict that and i have noticed that as well. The closer she gets to Robert the further she seems to stray from her husband.

  2. Yes. It seems that Mrs. Pontellier enjoys reviving her old "love life", if you will, and also finds joy in rebelling against her duties as mom and wife. Also, the longer Mr.Pontellier leaves her alone the further she grows in abandoning her chores. As you said, she wants a better life and relationship for herself so this is probably the cause of her actions.

  3. Hey sarah!! I noticed that she is a lot happier with him, but I feel like no matter what she should be loyal to her husband. She has children with this man. How would her children feel if they knew she loved someone other than their dad? I think she should suck it up for her kids.

  4. I definitely see this! She is becoming closer to Robert which is making her distant from Mr. Pontellier. But, I agree with Gia, she will sacrifice her happiness for her family.

  5. As she grows more and more distant to her husband, the more likely she might be to leave. Robert may only spur these feelings in her. But even then he may not condone her leaving due to Creole culture.

  6. Robert is definitely her escape from the routine lifestyle she doesn't fancy. In previous chapters it is stated how she doesn't see herself as a devoted mother and she really lets go when she goes swimming with him. Your prediction is on point.
