Mrs. Pontellier seemed to be able to relate to the saying: ‘you
never know what you have until it’s gone.’ After Robert left to go to Mexico,
Mrs. Pontellier started to realize that maybe she did have feelings for him, or
that he was nice company. She might have started feeling alone because her
husband isn’t really around, and it was also such short notice when Robert
left. “Roberts going away had some way taken the brightness, the color, the
meaning of everything. The conditions of her life were in no way changed, but
her whole existence was dulled,” (Chopin 61-62) Maybe Robert was kind of an escape
from her terrible marriage. Like when they went to mass early in the morning,
she had gotten into some kind of fight with Mr. Pontellier, so she went out
with Robert instead of staying in her house with her husband. She got away from
her husband and all the uncomfortable things happening around her with Robert,
and he treated her nicely. Even her husband pointed out that she was lost
without Robert. “How do you get on without him Edna?” (Chopin 63) I think that maybe
after Robert left she realized that she had more feelings than she originally
thought. He was her home away from home. If Fall Out Boy or Blink-182 were around during that
time period, these would be her favorite songs right now:
