Sour Reationship?

“You can love someone so much...but you can never love people as much as much as you miss them” (John Green). This quote pretty much sums up the relationship that Mr. and Mrs. Pontellier. So far in reading I’ve noticed that this was one of the major conflicts. This conflict shows that Mr. Pontellier is a character that is not very loving and is not a very caring character, also this Mr. Pontellier does indeed not care about Mrs. Pontellier and he possibly only wanted her for her dowry. For example, on page 2-3 Chopin writes “were his wife, Mrs. Pontellier, and young Robert Lebrun...what folly! to bathe at such an hour in such heat”. This quote just shows how Mr. Pontellier does not really care about Mrs. Pontellier was doing, or about her in general. I believe that the time period really factors into the relationship between the two for many reasons. For example, this marriage was arranged and Mr. Pontellier may have only accepted this for the dowry.

  1. I agree that Mr. Pontellier is not loving or caring. I also think you are correct in saying that Mr. Pontellier could have been accepted just for her dowry. Also the time period does factor in because arranged marriages do not produce true love.

  2. The John Green quote was a great connection to their relationship! Mr. Pontellier does not show her any affection which could be a reason she possibly has an affair with Robert Lebrun. The arranged marriage could also be a reason why he doesn't show her any affection.

  3. I agree with the fact that Mr. and Mrs. Pontellier do not care for each other. I think there is a high chance that she is having an affair with robert Lebrun. I also agree that the time period is a big factor because this marriage was a most likley arranged so the two didn't actually love each other.
