What is Love?
Mrs.
Pontellier and Robert have a strange relationship. They spend a lot of time
together and are very flirty even when Mr. Pontellier is around. They don’t seem
to care, but neither does he. He ignores the situation and lets them do what
they want. Before Mr. Pontellier leaves the house he states, “Well, send him about
his business when he bores you Edna” (Chopin 3). He does not seem to care that
Edna and Robert are staying at the house alone. Is he oblivious or does he just
not care? There are many signs that makes it seem like Edna is having an
affair. The ironic thing is, it would be with Robert whose mother is a very
well respected Creole woman. For him to encourage adultery is just as bad as
committing it. His mother would never approve of him doing it. She specifically
would never approve of Edna. Is it Robert or Mr. Pontellier that Edna wants?

I don't think Mr. Pontillier cares simply because he doesn't care for Edna. Their marriage was probably arranged like most Creole marriages and at they don't seem to truly love each other. Edna might not be in love with Robert either, but she's having fun in his company and that's might be all she cares to have. Mr. P can do better anyway. You're right though, it is ironic that he's the son of Madame Lebrun, a strict Creole woman.
ReplyDeleteI think that Robert and Edna flirt around Mr. Pontellier because they both know that he doesn't really care. Flirting and having an affair are two different things. Im not sure if Edna has intentions on cheating, she might just enjoy Robert's company.
