Unhappiness

Mrs. Pontellier is nothing but miserable with Mr. Pontellier. Arranged marriages are horrid, especially when forced to marry someone you don't take an interest in. Mr. Pontellier returned from Klein's hotel with high spirits. However, his wife was not having it. "He thought it very discouraging that his wife... evinced so little interest in things which concerned him." (Chopin 7) Mrs. Pontellier doesn't try to make an effort in the marriage. Instead, she worries about herself and ignores Mr. Pontellier's joys. The book goes on to show the reader how irritating arranged marriages can be. "Mrs. Pontellier sprang out of bed and went into the next room. She soon came back and sat on the edge of the bed... She... refused to answer her husband..." (Chopin 7) The author mentions this incident to reveal how frustated Mrs. Pontellier is. Mrs. Pontellier will not pretend/fake affection, and she will let Mr.
Pontellier know that she is and will be unhappy. Unfortunately, with arranged marriages this sitatution is presented often.

  2. I would hate to be married to a random man. Who would wanna be married to some stranger that you barely know that coild give you a hard time if you end up not working good together. Love should be by choice not by force. Groovy.

  3. Wow!! This is such an eye opener. It makes me wonder if Mrs. Pontellier is so unhappy with her marriage, is Mr. Pontellier feeling the same way? Did he wanna marry a woman who doesn't like responsibilities like taking care of her kids?
