In the book The Awakening by Kate Chopin, Mrs. and Mr. Pontellier are a married
couple who do not seem to be in love anymore, or maybe they never were. The
novel takes place in the late 19th century, and back then, your
partner was usually chosen for you whether you liked it or not. You can infer
when reading that the couple may have had an arranged marriage. In chapter one,
Mr. Pontellier leaves to spend time by himself while his wife spends the rest
of her evening with Robert Lebrun. “When they reached the cottage, the two
seated themselves with some appearance of fatigue upon the upper step of the
porch, facing each other, each leaning against a supporting post” (Chopin 2,3).
Léonce does not seem to care that Edna is laughing and flirting with another
man. It is wrong that in that time
period people were forced to marry and did not have the opportunity to search
for true love.
