Throughout The Awakening Edna tries her hardest to become her own person in a rather pushy society. Edna had shun away from all of society just to be herself, especially with Robert. Although Mr. Pontellier was her husband, Robert was her soulmate. When Robert left in a hurry it was easily seen that Edna was in a sort of "depression" without him, because now she was trapped once again. "There was no human being whom she wanted near her except Robert" (Chopin 155). Her home wasn't even an escape from the harmful society, so all she had was Robert. He made her feel normal, and not some outcast. Although Edna had achieved so much she gave up rather early. "It was too late; the shore was far behind her, and her strength was gone" (Chopin 157). Edna had given up on herself and unfortunately swam out until she couldn't anymore. Plot twist of the century.
