Edna's "Awakening" came to her when she climbs out of the ocean. Before her adventure in the sea, she didn't know how to swim. Apparently Edna swam to "Where no woman has swum". "But that night she was like the tottering, stumbling, clutching child, who of a sudden realizes its powers, and walks for the first time alone, boldly and with overconfidence" (Chopin 37). When Edna emerged from the ocean, she felt powerful, unlike she did before. Her mission out into the water where no woman has gone to before made her feel confident. Even Robert wasn't as threatening and strong to her when she spoke to him after her swim. She challenged him because she was confident enough. As, a woman in these times, they were treated as the non-dominant race. for Edna to stand up to a man with confidence meant her awakening had changed her.
As Edna ventures along on her journey, she is tested. Perhaps some of this testing angered her and caused her to want to leave her home. Other factors for the want to leave could be robert or other love interests. Edna's life was too stressful according to her. She could not live anymore. Her awakening unfortunately did not stop her from commiting suicide.
