Throughout my posts, I have stated that Edna is lonely and independent, has many personalities depending on who she is with, nd doesn't settle for anything less than what she wants. As most of you have the read the book and found out what happened due to Mrs. Chambers' book review last week, most of you should know what happens. In case you don't, I forbid you from reading further. ****SPOILER ALERT**** Edna commits suicide in the Gulf of Mexico. ****END OF SPOILER ALERT**** How could someone like Edna, someone who is gaining everything she ever wanted, her independence, and her freedom with every step she takes, meet such a tragic fate. I was attempting to figure out why she chose to commit suicide. At first I assumed that she was just generally unhappy with life. After all Robert did abandon her for who knows why, and no one really understands her. If you read a little further though, you notice she states, "The children appeared before her like antagonists who had overcome her; who had overpowered and sought to drag her into the soul's slavery for the rest of her days" (Chopin 155) It then seemed that the children were the ones who ultimately killed her (not literally). But then it hit me. Edna states that she was thinking of the children all night, before she killed herself. Why? Her children were in Iberville with their grandmother. However, they flooded her mind because of Adele. Adele had told her to "Think of the children, Edna. Oh think children! Remember! (Chopin 149)" Was Adele (sorry everyone that thought they'd be together) the one that killed her? Was she the cause of her death, a nice woman like Adele? It seems terrible to think about this, to think about the unimaginable. It makes you think. Why would Chopin do something like this? What is she trying to say? While thinking, I realized that maybe Chopin had a hidden reason. Many people suspect that Adele is supposed to symbolize society. She is the perfect definition of a woman from the 1800's. She took care of her children and stayed at home, doing whatever was required of her. In the beginning of the novel, Edna and Adele were friends. However, as Edna started to do her own thing, she started to talk with Mademoiselle Reisz, who represents all Edna wants to be. She represents how Edna wanted to live. She was single and had time to do whatever she wanted. Edna gradually broke away from Adele to Reisz. She broke from society's expectations of her and found herself in a place she could control. However, when Adele said to think about the children, that reminded Edna that society was still expecting her to be a mother, something she didn't want to do. Edna knew that society would always be watching her. That is most likely why she decided to commit suicide. Society crushed her from the stress it had placed on her by forcing her to be a mother, wife, and everything society expected her to be. Drowning herself, was her way of escaping. Edna, may you rest in peace in the Gulf of Mexico.
I think the band, Good Charlotte, understands how Edna felt. And don't ask me why there's a gap at the top. I honestly don't know.
