While Progressively reading The Awakening I've noticed some symbols that are very important to the plot of the story. For Example, something that I picked up on that was important to the plot was that, Edna getting her new house shows that maybe she is indeed going somewhere in society. Although she may be going up socially she's being relegated spiritually and emotionally. In chapter 32 Chopin writes “there was to be an addition-a small snuggery; there was to be frescoing, and hardwood flooring was to be put in…” (Chopin 127). In this quote the hardwood flooring is representing the social status of Edna and how it is improving. She might be improving socially but not emotionally, she's being bombarded with men, whether it's Alcee, Robert, or Mr. Pontellier. All the signs that are shown onlyshow her descending emotionally.
Edna did start to meet more people socially. She had a lot more friends. Robert was messing with her emotionally and that made her unable to live her life anymore.
