In the last chapter, you can infer that Edna committed
suicide in the ocean. She did this because she was exhausted of not being
happy. Robert was the one thing that gave her hope and faith that she could be
happy. He left her and that was her breaking point. I think Edna was selfish
for committing suicide. “Perhaps Doctor Mandelet would have understood if she
had seen him- but it was too late; the shore was far behind her, and he
strength was gone,” (Chopin 156-157). Edna didn’t even try to talk to anyone
else about her feelings. I understand that she, most likely, would have been
judged, but committing suicide isn’t the answer. Edna left her kids and Mr.
Pontellier without a goodbye or an explanation. She could’ve tried divorcing
Mr. Pontellier. She was scared of disappointing people but if Robert made her
that happy than it shouldn’t have mattered. I understand you should always make
sure your happiness comes first but leaving her family in the spur of the
moment was not the right answer.
I agree that Edna's decision to commit suicide was selfish and thoughtless. She was only concerned for her own feelings, not those of her children or husband. Funny picture!
