In the end of the book Edna commits suicide by
drowning. I found the ending mysterious because it was never outright stated. I
don’t know why she committed suicide right after she told Robert that she loved
him. She found happiness, but did it anyway. “She looked into the distance, and
the terror flamed up for an instant, then sank again. Edna heard her father’s
voice and her sister Margaret’s. She heard the barking of an old dog that was
chained to the sycamore tree. The spurs of the cavalry officer clanged as he
walked across the porch. There was the hum of bees, and the musky odor of pinks
filled the air.” (157). It ends with me thinking that there was more that was
missing. It was like a cliff hanger without coming back up. I like books, or book
series to end with a clear ending. We are never officially told that she died,
so there really isn’t any proof.
