The book ends by Edna committing suicide. It isn’t abruptly
said, however, it is very clear to infer. In my opinion, this is very selfish
of her. After Robert left for Mexico, Edna became depressed. "There
was no human being whom she wanted near her except Robert" (Chopin 155). She killed herself because of her broken
heart. I understand she loved Robert, but she still had a family—kids! At that
moment, she was thinking of herself and her emotions, not about how anyone else
would feel. She didn’t even say goodbye. I think Edna should’ve just
divorced her husband, if she was that unhappy. She would’ve been frowned upon
by society, but she would be able to be with Robert. Plus, her newfound happiness
might’ve changed her to be a good mother. Other people’s opinions shouldn’t
have mattered to her as long as she was happy. It’s a shame because it could’ve
be a win-win situation for her, Robert, and her sons.
I agree that Edna was wrong to leave her kids, but if that's what she wanted and that made her feel better then I believe she did the best thing. She formed a special bond with the ocean. That is probably the reason she chose to drown herself in the ocean to die.
ReplyDeleteI'm not sure how I feel about Edna committing suicide. Yes, it was selfish towards her kids, but she was extremely sad. I don't think someone should be forced to live if they don't want to, because then, they'd only be more neglectful towards the people in their lives. Maybe Edna could've done something different, but maybe not. BTW I laughed so hard at your picture. My aunt thought this was an obituary for someone omg.
